 1925년 팬실베니아 출신의 타의 추종을 불허하는 재즈 오르간의 거장이다.

재즈 피아니스트로서의 캐리어를 시작해 하몬드 오르간의 선구적 플레이어로서

비밥 스타일에서 부터 R & B, 블루스, 가스펠까지 폭넓게 연주하는 Soul 재즈 스타일을

확립해 인기를 얻었다. 발끝의 페달연주로 베이스라인을 조종하면서 좌우의 손으로 배킹과

리드를 해내는 건반 연주는 연주 그 자체로 Blue Note시대에 트리오로 남긴[Crazy! Baby], Verve 시대에 오케스트라를 따르게 한 [The Cat], Beastie Boys가 샘플링 하기도 한

[Root Down] 등 수많은 작품들을 남겼다. 2005년 2월 사망.
