1970년대 초반부터 서서히 기지개를 펴기 시작한 호주의 팝음악은 뇌관 역할을 맡은 AC/DC와 리틀 리버 밴드(Little River Band)를 시작으로 1980년대의 인엑세스(INXS), 멘 앳 워크(Men At Work), 에어 서플라이(Air Supply), 미드나잇 오일(Midnight Oil), 카일리 미노그(Kylie Minogue)를 거쳐 1990년대 실버체어(Silverchair), 메릴 배인브리지(Merril Bainbridge), 새비지 가든(Savage Garden), 티나 아레나(Tina Arena)처럼 괜찮은 후배들로 이어지면서 미국, 영국, 캐나다와 함께 상당한 경쟁력을 갖춘 아티스트들로 세계의 대중 음악을 움직이고 있다
