1825년 스코틀랜드의 존 스콧(1810~1900)이 작곡한 스코틀랜드민요로 
티 없이 아름답고 고왔던 소녀를 그리워 하며 부르는 곡이다. 
애니 로리는 스코틀랜드 덤프리스시(市) 맥스웰턴 하우스에 살던 
로버트 로리경의 딸로서 실제 인물이었다. 
그녀는 사관학생 윌리엄 더글러스를 사랑했지만 결혼은 다른 남자와 하였다. 
더글러스는 자기 곁을 떠난 애니 로리를 그리워 하며 1820년에 이 시를 지었다. 
그뒤 1825년에 존 스콧 부인이 시집 "스코틀랜드의 노래"에서 이 시를 발견 하고 
곡을 붙여 'Annie Laurie'라고 하였고, 핀레이던이 반주를 넣어 1838년 
에든버러에서 출판된 "스코틀랜드 민요집"에 실었다. 
이후 크림전쟁이 일어나자 크림반도에 상륙한 스코틀랜드 군인들이 고향에 두고 온 
사랑하는 여인을 그리워하며 이 노래를 부르기 시작하면 서 널리 퍼져나갔다. 
"옛날 거닐던 강가에 이슬 젖은 풀잎 그리워라 애니 로리 언제나 오려나 
그대와 만나던 세월 흘렀어도 그리워라 애니 로리 꿈속에 보이네..."-로 시작하는 
이 노래를 미국의 유명한 컨츄리 싱어 Slim Whitman이 특유의 애절한 목소리로 불렀다.
