Many were the wild notes her merry voice would pour,
Many were the blithe birds that warbled them o'er

I dream of Jeannie with the light brown hair
Floating like a vapor on the soft, summer air.

I sigh for Jeannie, but her light form strayed
Far from the fond parts round her native glade;

Her smiles have vanished and her sweet songs flown
Flitting like the dreams that have cheered us and gone.

포스터 (Foster, Stephen Collins,1826 ~1864)는 미국의 가곡 작곡가이다.

펜실베이니아주 로렌스빌 출생. 소년시절부터 음악에 재능을 보이고 14세 때
처녀작 '티오가 왈츠'를 작곡하였다. 1841년 대학에 입학하였으나 1주일 만에 중퇴하고
음악교사 H.쿠퍼의 지도 아래 베토벤 음악을 연구, 그때 부터 가곡을 작곡하기 시작하였다.

1844년 '창문을 열어다오, 사랑하는 이여 Open the Lattice, Love'를 출판하였으며,
그 무렵에는 친구들과 함께 합창단을 조직하여 많은 가곡을 제공하였다.

1848년 'Oh! Susanna'가 100달러로 팔린 것에 자신을 얻어 가곡 작가의 길을 택하게
되었으며 그 후 '시골 경마(競馬)''고향 사람들 Old Folks at Home''벤조를 뜯어라'(1851)
'Massa’s in the Cold, Cold Ground'(1852) '켄터키 옛집 My old Kentucky Home'
'금발의 제니','올드 블랙 조 Old Black Joe'등의 작품이 E.P.크리스티악단 및
minstrel show 등에서 불리어 유행, 그의 이름은 미국 전체에 널리 알려지게 되었다.
