1815년 1월 8일 미국의 앤드류 잭슨(Andrew Jackson) 장군은 적은 수의 군사와 빈약한 장비에도 불구하고 뉴올리언즈 싸움에서 10,000여명의 영국군을 패퇴시키고 승리를 거두데 되는데 이 싸움이 1812년 시작된 마국과 영국 전쟁의 최후의 싸움으로 기록되고 있다.
앤드류 잭슨은 이 전쟁의 승리로 미국의 구국 영웅이 되었고 제7대 대통령이 되기도 했다.
이 전쟁의 이야기를 미국의 전통적인 fiddle tune (바이올린 위주의 경쾌한 선율)에 실어 노래하고 있는데 이러한 리듬을 록카빌리(Rockabilly)라 한다. 이 것은 Rock and Roll의 초기 형태로 40년대와 50년대의 컨트리뮤직 힐리빌리(Hillbilly)와 결합된 형태이다.
자니 호튼(Johnny Horton)은 Rockabilly 싱어로 이 곡은 1959년 6월 5주간에 이어 7월의 첫주 까지 모두 6주간 빌보드 1위를 장식했다.
