1965년.. 작곡가였던 P.F.Sloan과 프로듀서였던 Steve Barri는 노래 몇곡을 만들어
자신들이 일하던 Studio에서 몇몇 세션맨들과 녹음하여 The Grass Roots라는 이름으로
방송국등에 데모 테잎을 보내게 되는데 그중 바로 이곡 'Where Were...'가 큰 호응을
받게되자 밴드 멤버를 보강하여 정식으로 The Grass Roots를 출범합니다..
66년 재 녹음한 이곡을 타이틀로한 첫번째 앨범을 발표하지만 Sloan과 Barri의 의견
충돌을 보이자 멤버들도 각자의 길로 뿔뿔히 흩어져 해체위기를 맞습니다..앨범도
타이틀 곡인 이곡 이외에는 부진을 면치 못하고 있을때..Rob Grill이 등장합니다..
리드싱어로 들어왔던 그는 팀을 재 정비하고 밴드를 주도하기 시작합니다..그 이후
67년발표한 'Let's Live For Today'가 대 히트 한 후 75년까지 Midnight Confession,
Bella Linda, I'd Wait A Million Years, Sooner or Later..등등 많은 곡들을 히트
시키고.. 82년까지는 명목만 유지하지만 82년 미국 투어에서는 워싱턴 공연시
60만명이 몰릴 정도의 인기를 과시합니다.. 그 이후 Rob Grill이 솔로 활동에 전념하게
되면서 해체되다시피 하였다가 2000년에 Grill을 위주로 재 결합하여 활동을 재개
하는데...올 4월에 발표한 Live Gold는 올드팬의 반응에 힘입어 빌보드 Top40안에
랭크되는 기염을 보이기도 합니다..
