이 곡은 1940년 Leadbelly (본명 Huddie Ledbetter, 1888-1949)의 작품으로 남부 목화밭에서의 힘들었던 추억을 노래한 것이다.그러나 대중의 관심 밖에서 20년간 묻혀져 있다가 1961년 Highwaymen의 코러스 레코드에 의해 크게 알려졌다. 이어서 C.C.R, Harry Belafonte, The New Christy Minstrels와 요들 버젼의 Kitten, 라틴 버젼의 Alberto Vazquez 등의 노래가 있다. Ace Cannon과 Boots Randolph 의 섹소폰 연주도 경쾌하다.이 곡을 쓴 리드벨리는 낮에는 목화농장에서 고된 노역을 하고 밤에는 거리의 술집에서 밤무대를 뛰다가 결국 살인과 폭행으로 교도소에서 생의 대부분을 보냈다. 그나마 그의 음악적 재질을 아낀 주지사가 사면시켜준 덕에 말년에 겨우 자기의 앨범도 취입 하고 유럽 공연도 가지게 되지만 얼마 못가 생을 마감했다. 그는 이 노래뿐 아니라 'Midnight Special', 'Rock Island Line' 같은 포크 블루스 곡을 만들어 남겼다.
