킹스턴 트리오(The Kingston Trio) 는 1957년 Dave Guard, Bob Shane, Nick Reynolds 세명에 의해 결성되었다.

가드(Guard)는 1961년에 멤버들과의 음악적 견해차로 팀을 떠나고  John Stewart 로 교체되어 1960년대 비틀즈 등으로 대변되는 브리티쉬 인베이젼 까지 인기를 구가하였고 1967년 팀이 해체되었다.

 

탐 둘리(Tom Dooley)는 미국 North Carolina에서 1866년 발생한 로라 포스터(Laura Foster)양의 살해사건에 억울한 누명을 쓰고 교수형을 받은 팜 둘라(Tom Dula)의 이야기를 노래하고 있다. 로라는 탐의 약혼녀였는데 탐을 짝사랑한 앤 멜튼(Anne Melton)이 질투심에 로라를 야산에서 칼로 찔러 죽였지만, 탐이 앤을 대신하여 허위 자백을 하고 교수대의 이슬로 사라진다는 슬픈 이야기이다.

 

노래에 나오는 제임스 그레이슨(James Grayson)은 앤을 사이에 두고 탐과 연적관계인 보안관으로서 탐을 체포하고 사형을 집행한 인물이라고 한다. 제임스 그레이슨은 앤과 결혼하였는데 앤이 늙어 더이상 양심을 속이지 못하고 고백함으로써 탐 둘리의 사연이 세상에 널리 알려지게 된다.

 

우리나라에서는 불건전한 가사를 이유로 금지된 곡이었지만 통기타와 더불어 캠프송으로 많이 불려졌다.
