of all the pounding of the rain beyond the rolling of the sea 

thousand people know my name, the one or two may yet know me

출렁이는 파도 너머 쏟아지는 비 속에
내 이름을 아는 이가 천명은 있겠지, 한 두명은 나를 알기도 할 거야

there in the middle of the night I will find a friendly face

I will be taken back again to some new loving place

 

한 밤 중에 친절한 얼굴을 찾게 되겠지
어딘가 새로운 다정한 곳으로 다시 이끌리겠지

 

no, not be left alone although solitude’s my home

faces there are I haven't seen, faces there are I will never see

아니, 외롭지 않을 거야, 고독이 나의 집이지만
만난 적 없는 얼굴들, 내가 만날 리 없는 얼굴들이 거기 있네

 
but what a waste it would have been had I been anyone but me

still if I seem a little proud my head will often bent

하지만 내가 나 아닌 다른 사람이었다면 얼마나 헛된 일이었을지
내가 오만해 보일지도 모르지만 나도 가끔은 고개를 돌려

on seeing someone in a crowd I will never hope to comprehend

oh no, I am not alone although solitude is my home

내가 절대로 이해하려고 바라지 않을 누군가를 군중 속에서 찾네
오 아니, 난 외롭지 않아, 고독이 나의 집이지만

I tried, I begged the hand of help sometimes once silence gets too rough

 all I can offer is myself that never seems to be enough

침묵을 견디기 어려울 땐 도움의 손길을 구걸하기도 하네
절대로 충분한 것 같지 않는 나 자신이 내가 가진 모든 것

and yet tat somethings, I can only guess and never hope to understand
here are some men who kill for less than someone's hand

하지만 누군가의 손길보다 더 작은 것을 위해 살인하는 사람도 있네
짐작만 할 수 있을 뿐 이해하기를 바라지는 않을 일들

I turn my face toward the wind and shuffle down the darkened street

아니, 난 외롭지 않아, 고독이 나의 집이지만
바람을 향해 얼굴을 돌리고 어두워진 거리를 살펴보네

which with her coming on again

there is no telling who I will meet

거기로 그녀가 다시 내게 다가오네
내가 누굴 만날지 알 길은 없지

 
perhaps an arm will open up to hold me for a while

who knows what waits within the night beneath herself and her smile

아마 잠시 나를 안아주려고 팔을 벌릴거야
그녀 자신과 미소 아래 이 밤에 무엇이 기다리고 있을지는 아무도 모르지
