  It was late one summer evening when I saw that butterfly

어느 늦은 여름 밤에

On its wings were every colour you could find

날개에 온갖 빛깔을 띤 나비를 보았어요

 

And I held it for a moment then I let it fly away

잠깐 손에 쥐고 있다가 날려 보내주었죠

Soon it disappeared and left me far behind

그랬더니 날 뒤로하고 금세 날아가 버렸어요

 

And in my imagination, I was floating on the breeze

상상속에서 난 산들바람을 타고

Drifting over every mountain, sea and land

산, 바다, 육지 위를 날아다녔죠

 

And with no one there to stop me

거긴 아무도 날 방해할 사람이 없어요

Every dream was coming true

모든 꿈이 이루어진거죠

People walking side by side, and hand in hand

사람들이 서로서로 나란히 손잡고 걸어 다니는군요

나비야, 나비야, 나비야

Spread your wings, like a bird, flying high

날개를 활짝 펴고 새처럼 하늘 높이 날아라

 

Set your sail, ride the wind take the news around the world

바람따라 여행하며, 세상 사람들에게

Bringing love and happiness eternally

언제나 사랑과 행복의 소식을 전해다 주렴

나비야, 나비야, 나비야

Fly away, like a star in the sky

저 하늘 별처럼 멀리멀리 날아가거라

Carry hope, carry faith into every lonely heart

외로운 사람들에게 희망과 믿음을 전하고

Teach the world to live in peace and harmony

세상 사람들에게 평화와 화합 속에서 사는 법을 가르쳐주렴

 

In a dream I saw it flying to a far and distant shore

꿈 속에서 나비가 저 멀리 바닷가로 날아가는 걸 보았어요

Where the people stood and watched it with a smile

그 곳 사람들은 미소지으며 나비를 바라보고 있었죠

 

Soon the quarreling was over

그러자 금세 다툼은 끝나고

There was peace throughout the land

그 곳에 평화가 찾아왔어요

 

Making all the days of travelling seem worth while

인생이 살만한 가치가 있는 것이라 느끼게 하는 평화말이에요

There were tulip fields in holland

네덜란드에는 튤립 꽃밭이

and the roses in versailles

베르사유엔 장미꽃이

And the english country garden in the sun

그리고 영국엔 햇볕이 내리쬐는 시골정원도 있었죠

 

Edelweiss and bright red popples

에델바이스와 붉은 빛 포플러나무

Lovely blue forget-me-nots

푸른 빛깔 사랑스런 물망초들이

Growing tall and proud, and shared by everyone

무럭무럭 자라서 모든 이들과 함께 기쁨을 나눠요

Through the rain to the sun

빗속을 뚫고 햇빛을 향해 나아가죠
