짐 크로우치(Jim Croce /ˈkroʊtʃi/)는 1943년생인데 1973년 9월 20일 비행기 사고로 30세의 젊은 나이에 불행한 죽음을 맞았다. 이 노래는 그의 사후 3개월이 지난 1973년 12월 29일 빌보드 차트 1위에 올라 다음 해 1월 5일 까지 2주간 1위 자리를 지켰다. 

 

1972년에 나온 곡이지만 뒤늦게 그가 죽은 뒤에야 1위에 올랐다. 그의 최초 빌보드 차트 1위곡은 Bad, Bad Leroy Brown 으로 이미 1973년 7월 21일, 28일의 2주간 1위에 오른 전력을 가지고 있다. 

 

결국 빌보드 1위로 유명해 진 그는 갑자기 밀려 드는 무리한 공연스케듈을 강행하다가 사고를 당한 것이다.
