1963년 5월 18일과 25일 2주간 빌보드 핫100 차트 1위에 오른 곡이다. 남은 인생 행복해지길 원한다면 절대 예쁜 여자와 결혼하지 말고 못생긴 여자와 결혼하라고 노래하고 있다. 

 

예쁜 여자는 남자를 왜소하게 보이게 하고 자주 남자를 좌절하게 만들고 결혼과 동시에 남편마음을 상하게 하는 일들을 저지르는 반면, 못 생긴 여자는 끼니 때마다 맛있는 음식을 장만하고 항시 상냥하게 남편을 대할 것이니 친구들로부터 재미없는 놈이란 소리 듣느니 못 생긴 여자라도 바로 결혼하는 게 낫다는 내용인데 이 노래는 멜로디보다는 흥겨운 리듬과 재미있는 가사 때문에 인기를 얻은 것 같다.

 

예쁜 여자를 시샘하는 평범한 여자들과 또 그런 평범한 여자를 아내로 둔 보통 남자들의 압도적인 지지가 1위를 차지한 비결인 듯 하다.  

 

이 곡은 1990년 셰어(Cher)가 주연한 영화 '귀여운 바람둥이'(Mermaids), 그리고 1997년 줄리아 로버츠(Julia Roberts)와 카메론 디아즈(Cameron Diaz)가 열연한 '내 남자친구의 결혼식'(My Best Freiend's Wedding)에 사용되기도 했다.
