밥 딜런을 좋아하게 만든 곡이다. 우리나라의 각설이 타령, '작년에 왔던 각설이가 죽지도 않고 또 왔네...' 아니면 '인천 앞바다에 사이다가 떴어도 꼽뿌(Cup)가 없으면 못 마십니다.. 그런 느낌이랄까, 당시로서는 파격적으로 멜로디 보다는 단순한 리듬에 박자와 발음, 운률을 위주로 하는, 힙합의 시초라고 평가 받기도 한다.  foot, soot, put, but, anyway, many say, early May..와 같이 운률을 맞추고 음보(音步)와 악센트로 리듬을 살린 가사 자체가 시(詩)고 그것을 읊으면 바로 노래가 되었다. 랩송의 원조격이다.

 

Joan Baez와 같이 Bob Dylan은 베트남전 반대에 앞장 선 가수인데, 반전단체인 Weathermen,  Weather Underground의 이름은 이 노래 가사중 '바람이 어디로 부는지 알려고 일기예보관에게 물어 볼 필요는 없지' (You don't need a weather man to know which way the wind blows)에서 따 왔다고 한다.

 

비틀즈가 사랑타령만 하지 않고 평화운동을 실천하고 명상과 철학적인 음악으로 까지 영역을 넓혀 간 것은 밥 딜런에게서 많은 영향을 받았다고 고백했고, 지미 헨드릭스(Jimi Hendrix)가  밥 딜런이 노래하는 것을 보고 자신도 노래할 수 있겠다는 자신감을 얻었다고 한다.

 

라이브 공연에서 가사를 보지 않고 이 노래를 부룰 수 있을까? 요즘은 발 앞에 화면을 띄워서 가사를 훔쳐 보고 하는데  옛날에는 어떻게 했을 지 궁금하다.
