1961년 9월 4일 과 11일 2주간 빌보드 핫100차트 1위곡이다. 구전되어 전해지던 미국흑인영가를 1957년 밥 깁슨(Bob Gibson)이 처음 레코딩했다. 1961년 미국 남성 5인조 포크 중창단, 하이웨이멘(The Highwaymen)이 발표해서 미국과 영국에서 1위를 기록하게 된다.

 

여기서 마이클(Michael)은  기독교에서 흔히 죽은 자의 영혼을 안내하는 저승사자로 간주되고 있는 천사장 미가엘(미카엘)을 지칭하는 것이라 한다.
