이 곡의 가사는 구약성서의 전도서{Ecclesiastes[iklì:ziǽsti:z:이클리지애티즈]}에서 가져 온 것으로 1959년 미국의 포크 싱어 피트 시거(Pete Seeger)가 작곡 1962년에 처음으로 발표했다.

 

버즈가 리메이크하여 1965년 10월 1일 싱글로, 그리고 12월 6일 앨범으로 발매. 12월 4일자부터 12월 18일자까지 연속 3주간 빌보드 핫100 차트 1위를 차지했다.  

 

전도서 [ The Book of Ecclesiastes, 傳道書 ]는 솔로몬(기원전 4세기)이 그 노년기에 하느님과 인간의 근원적인 관계회복에서만이 영원한 인생의 가치와 의미를 찾을 수 있음을 보여 주기 위하여 기록한 구약성서의 한 책이다. 따라서 이 곡의 작사가는 솔로몬 왕이라 할 수 있다.
